This complicates the interpretationofexistingliteratureincaseswhendifferenttechniqueshavebeenusedwithfMRIdatatomeasurethesingle conceptof‘‘connectivity.’’Additionallytheoptimumchoiceofmethodforfutureanalysesisoftenunclear. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Inthisstudy,measuresoffunctionalandeffectiveconnectivityinthemotorsystemwere calculatedbasedonthreesourcesofvariation:inter-subjectvariationintaskactivationlevel;within-subjectvariationintask- relatedresponses;andwithin-subjectresidualvariationafterremovaloftaskeffects.Twotaskconditionswerecompared. Themethodsyieldeddifferentinter-regionalcorrelationcoefficients.However,allthreeapproachesproducedsimilarresults, qualitativelyandsometimesquantitatively,forconditiondifferencesinconnectivity. Conclusions/Significance:Whiletheseresultsarespecifictothemotorregionsstudied,theydosuggestthatwithin-subject andacross-subjectresultsmaybeusefullycompared.Also,thepresenceoftask-specificcorrelationsinresidualtimeseries supports arguments that residuals may not substitute for resting-state data, but rather may reflect thesame underlying variationspresentduringsteady-stateperformance.
