Aims:WeaimedtoevaluatethistoolinScottishprisonersbycomparingscoreswithstandardmeasuresofautistictraits (Autism Quotient (AQ)), neurodevelopmental history (Asperger Syndrome (and High-Functioning Autism) Diagnostic Interview(ASDI)),andsocialcognition(Ekman60Facestest). Methods: Prison officers across all 12 publicly-run closed prisons in Scotland assessed convicted prisoners using the screeningtool.Thissampleincludedmaleandfemaleprisonersandbothadultandyoungoffenders.Prisonerswithhigh scores, along with anequal number of age and sex-matched controls,were invited totake partin interviews. Prisoners’ relativeswerecontactedtocompleteaneurodevelopmentalassessment. Results:2458prisonerswerescreenedusingthetool,and4%scoredabovethecut-off.126prisonerswerefurtherassessed usingstandardisedmeasures.7ofthose126assessedscored32orabove(cut-off)ontheAQ.44interviewswerecompleted with prisoners’ relatives, no prisoner reached the cut-off score on the ASDI. Scores on the screening tool correlated significantlywithAQandASDIscores,andnotwiththeEkman60FacesTestorIQ.Sensitivitywas28.6%andspecificity 75.6%;AUCwas59.6%. Conclusions:Althoughthisscreeningtoolmeasuresautistictraitsinthispopulation,sensitivityforscoresof32oraboveon theAQispoor.Weconsiderthatthislimitsitsusefulnessanddonotrecommendthatthetoolisroutinelyusedtoscreenfor ASDsinprisons.
