However,effectsofprenatalexposuretomoderatelevelsofairpollutantsoncytokine regulationincordbloodofhealthyinfantsareunknown. Methods: In a birth cohort of 265 healthy term-born neonates, we assessed maternal exposure to particles with an aerodynamicdiameterof10mmorless(PM10),aswellastoindoorairpollutionduringthelasttrimester,specificallythelast 21,14,7,3and1daysofpregnancy.Asaproxyfortraffic-relatedairpollution,wedeterminedthedistanceofmothers’ homestomajorroads.Wemeasuredcytokineandchemokinelevels(MCP-1,IL-6,IL-10,IL-1?,TNF-aandGM-CSF)incord blood serum using LUMINEX technology. Their association with pollution levels was assessed using regression analysis, adjustedforpossibleconfounders. Results:Mean(95%-CI)PM10exposureforthelast7daysofpregnancywas18.3(10.3–38.4 mg/m3).PM10exposureduring thelast3daysofpregnancywassignificantlyassociatedwithreducedIL-10andduringthelast3monthsofpregnancywith increased IL-1? levels in cord blood after adjustment for relevant confounders.
