This is an international, multidisci- plinary initiative, the overarching aim of articlesintheHMAPCollectionaddtothat output.Someweregeneratedbyscientists funded as part of the HMAP research effort, while others had their genesis in papers presented at ‘Oceans Past II: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the His- tory and Future of Marine Animal Popu- lations’, an international conference con- venedbyHMAPandhostedbytheAquatic Ecosystem Research Laboratory at the University of British Columbia in May 2009.TheCollectiontestifiestothevitality of the HMAP approach to the dynamic interaction of humankind and the marine environment. This overview explains how that approach evolved, identifies the re- search issues that lie at its heart, and outlines some of the contributions to knowledgeandunderstandingthatHMAP researchhasyielded. measuring the present state of ocean life against conditions in a ‘lost past’ that might to some extent be recovered throughhistoricalresearchintotheefforts of humans to extract fish from the seas overthelongterm.Inturn,suchresearch promised to reveal the degree to which marine life now, and in the future, has been ‘influenced and cultured by the courage, ingenuity and folly of human endeavour’inthepast[5]. which is to improve knowledge and understandingofthelong-terminteraction of humankind with the marine environ- ment.
