This approach poorly predicts clinical outcome for individual patients. Gene expression profiling holds promise to improve clinicalstratification,thuspavingthewayforindividualizedtherapy. MethodologyandPrincipalFindings:Agenome-widegeneexpressionanalysiswasperformedonacohortof91patients. Weused91tumor-and65adjacentnormallungtissuesamples.Wedefinedsetsofpredictorgenes(probesets)withthe expressionprofiles. Thepowerof predictorgeneswasevaluatedusinganindependentcohortof96non-smallcelllung cancer-and6normallungsamples.Weidentifiedatumorsignatureof5genesthataggregatesthe156tumorandnormal samplesintotheexpectedgroups.Wealsoidentifiedahistologysignatureof75genes,whichclassifiesthesamplesinthe majorhistologicalsubtypesofnon-smallcelllungcancer.Correlationanalysisidentified17geneswhichshowedthebest association with post-surgery survival time.
