Tosettlethesedisputes,sixchloroplastlociandfourmitochondriallociwereselectedtoexaminetherelationshipsbetween 50accessionsofAsiancultivatedriceand119accessionsofcommonwildricefromChinabasedonDNAsequenceanalysis inthepresentstudy.TheresultsindicatedthatSouthernChinaisthegeneticdiversitycenterofO.rufipogonanditmightbe theprimarydomesticationregionofO.sativa.Moleculardatingsuggestedthatthetwosubspecieshaddiverged0.1million years ago, much earlier than the beginning of rice domestication. Genetic differentiations and phylogeography analyses indicatedthatindicawasdomesticatedfromtropicalO.rufipogonwhilejaponicawasdomesticatedfromO.rufipogonwhich locatedinhigherlatitude.Theseresultsprovidedmolecularevidencesforthehypothesesof(i)SouthernChinaistheorigin centerofO.sativainChinaand(ii)thetwosubspeciesofO.sativaweredomesticatedmultipletimes.
