Freak-Polietal.BMCPublicHealth2011,11:824 /1471-2458/11/824 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Participantcharacteristicsassociatedwithgreater reductionsinwaistcircumferenceduringafour- month,pedometer-based,workplacehealth program RosanneLAFreak-Poli*,RoryWolfe,HelenWalls,KathrynBackholerandAnnaPeeters Abstract Background:Workplacehealthprogramshavedemonstratedimprovementsinanumberofriskfactorsforchronic disease.However,therehasbeenlittleinvestigationofparticipantcharacteristicsthatmaybeassociatedwith changeinriskfactorsduringsuchprograms.Theaimofthispaperistoidentifyparticipantcharacteristics associatedwithimprovedwaistcircumference(WC)followingparticipationinafour-month,pedometer-based, physicalactivity,workplacehealthprogram. Methods:762adultsemployedinprimarilysedentaryoccupationsandvoluntarilyenrolledinafour-month workplaceprogramaimedatincreasingphysicalactivitywererecruitedfromtenAustralianworksitesin2008. Seventy-ninepercentreturnedattheendofthehealthprogram.Dataincludeddemographic,behavioural, anthropometricandbiomedicalmeasurements.WCchange(beforeversusafter)wasassessedbymultivariable linearandlogisticregressionanalyses.Sevengroupingsofpotentialassociatedvariablesfrombaselinewere sequentiallyaddedtobuildprogressivelylargerregressionmodels. Results:GreaterimprovementinWCduringtheprogramwasassociatedwithhavingcompletedtertiaryeducation, consumingtwoorlessstandardalcoholicbeveragesinoneoccasioninthetwelvemonthspriortobaseline, undertakinglessbaselineweekendsittingtimeandlowerbaselinetotalcholesterol.AgreaterWCatbaselinewas stronglyassociatedwithagreaterimprovementinWC.Asub-analysisinparticipantswitha‘high-risk’baselineWC revealedthatyoungerage,enrollingforreasonsotherthanappearance,undertakinglessweekendsittingtimeat baseline,eatingtwoormorepiecesoffruitperdayatbaseline,higherbaselinephysicalfunctioningandlowerbaseline bodymassindexwereassociatedwithgreateroddsofmovingto‘lowrisk’WCattheendoftheprogram.
