Methods:Ninebirchpollenallergicpatientswithrhinitis,eightwithasthmaandfourcontrolswerestudiedduring pollenseasonandafternasalandbronchialallergenchallenge.Eosinophilsandneutrophilswereincubatedinvitro withassaybufferandopsonizedSephadexparticlesforspontaneousandC3b-inducedgranuleproteinrelease.The releasedamountofeosinophilcationicprotein(ECP),eosinophilperoxidase(EPO)andmyeloperoxidase(MPO)was measuredbyspecificradioimmunoassay. Results:C3b-induceddegranulationresultedinincreasedreleaseofECPandMPOfromprimedbloodeosinophils andneutrophilsinbothallergicrhinitisandallergicasthmaduringpollenseasonandafterbothnasaland bronchialchallenge(p-values0.008to0.043).Afterbronchialchallenge,theECPreleasewassignificantlyhigherin therhiniticgroupcomparedtotheasthmaticgroup[19.8vs.13.2%,(p=0.010)].ThepropensityforEPOrelease wasweakinallchallengemodelsbutfollowedthesamepatterninbothallergicgroups. Conclusions:Systemicallyactivatedeosinophilsandneutrophilshavesimilarpatternsofdegranulationafter allergenexposureinallergicrhinitisandallergicasthma.ThereleasedamountofECP,EPOandMPOwassimilarin allallergenchallengemodelsinbothallergicg
