Methods:Alongitudinalstudyof202mothersandtheirinpatientLBWneonateswasconductedfromNovember 2009toMay2010.MotherswereinterviewedatrecruitmenttoascertaintheirknowledgeofKMC,andthen orientedonitspractice.Afterdischarge,themothersreportedatweeklyintervalsforfourfollowupvisitswhere dataabouttheirperceptions,attitudesandpracticesofKMCwererecorded.Arepeatedmeasurelogisticregression analysiswasdonetoassessvariabilityinthebinaryresponsesatthevariousreviewsvisits. Results:Atrecruitment23(11.4%,95%CI:7.4to16.6%)mothersknewaboutKMC.Atdischarge95.5%werewilling tocontinueKMCathomewith93.1%willingtopracticeatnight.95.5%thoughtKMCwasbeneficialtothemand 96.0%beneficialtotheirbabies.98.0%wouldrecommendKMCtoothermotherswith71.8%willingtopractice KMCoutdoors. Atfirstfollowupvisit99.5%(181)werestillpracticingeitherintermittentorcontinuousKMC.Thisproportiondid notchangesignificantlyoverthefourweeks(OR:1.4,95%CI:0.6to3.3,p-value:0.333).Overthefourweeks, increasinglymoremotherspracticedKMCatnight(OR:1.7,95%CI:1.2to2.6,p=0.005),outsidetheirhomes(OR: 2.4,95%CI:1.7to3.3,p0.001)andreceivedspousalhelp(OR:1.6,95%CI:1.1to2.4,p=0.007).Householdchores andpotentiallynegativecommunityperceptionsofKMCdidnotaffectitspracticewithoddsof0.8(95%CI:0.5to 1.2,p=0.282)and1.0(95%CI:0.6to1.7,p=0.934)respectively.Duringthefollow-upperiodtheneonatesgained 23.7sg(95%CI:22.6gto24.7g)perday
