Methods:AcrosssectionalsurveyofallchildcarecentredirectorsintheHunterNewEngland(HNE)areaof northernNSWwasconductedin2010usingacomputerassistedtelephoneinterviewingservice. Results:Ninety-eightpercent(319/325)ofchildcarecentresidentifiedwithintheHNEareaparticipatedinthe survey.Thirty-fivepercent(113/319)ofcentresindicatedthattheyhadpoliciesconcerningrespiratoryillnessinstaff members.Sixty-threepercent(202/319)ofcentresindicatedthattheykeptarecordofstaffvaccination,however,of the170centre’swhoindicatedtheyupdatedtheirrecords,74%(125/170)onlyupdatedrecordsifastaffmember notifiedthem.Ofcentreswithrecords,58%indicatedthatfewerthanhalfoftheirstaffwerevaccinated. Conclusion:Manychildcareworkershavenothadarecentpertussisimmunisation.Thispotentiallyplacesyoung childrenatriskatanagewhentheyaremostvulnerabletoseveredisease.Withincreasinguseofchildcare, nationalaccreditationandlicensingrequirementsneedtomonitortheimplementationofpoliciesonchildcare workervaccination.Higherlevelsofvaccinationwouldassistinreducingtheriskofpertussiscasesandsubsequent outbreaksinchildcarecentres.
