Calvo-Mu?ozetal.BMCPediatrics2013,13:14 /1471-2431/13/14 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Prevalenceoflowbackpaininchildrenand adolescents:ameta-analysis InmaculadaCalvo-Mu?oz1*,AntoniaGómez-Conesa2andJulioSánchez-Meca3 Abstract Background:Lowbackpain(LBP)iscommoninchildrenandadolescents,anditisbecomingapublichealth concern.Inrecentyearstherehasbeenaconsiderableincreaseinresearchstudiesthatexaminetheprevalenceof LBPinthispopulation,butstudiesexhibitgreatvariabilityintheprevalenceratesreported.Thepurposeofthis researchwastoexamine,bymeansofameta-analyticinvestigation,theprevalenceratesofLBPinchildrenand adolescents. Methods:Studieswerelocatedfromcomputerizeddatabases(ISIWebofKnowledge,MedLine,PEDro,IME,LILACS, andCINAHL)andothersources.ThesearchperiodextendedtoApril2011.Tobeincludedinthemeta-analysis, studieshadtoreportaprevalencerate(whetherpoint,periodorlifetimeprevalence)ofLBPinchildrenand/or adolescents(≤18yearsold).Twoindependentresearcherscodedthemoderatorvariablesofthestudies,and extractedtheprevalencerates.Separatemeta-analyseswerecarriedoutforthedifferenttypesofprevalencein ordertoavoiddependenceproblems.Ineachmeta-analysis,arandom-effectsmodelwasassumedtocarryoutthe statisticalanalyses. Results:Atotalof59articlesfulfilledtheselectioncriteria.Themeanpointprevalenceobtainedfrom10studies was0.120(95%CI:0.09and0.159).Themeanperiodprevalenceat12monthsobtainedfrom13studieswas0.336 (95%CI:0.269and0.410),whereasthemeanperiodprevalenceatoneweekobtainedfromsixstudieswas0.177 (95%CI:0.124and0.247).Themeanlifetimeprevalenceobtainedfrom30studieswas0.399(95%CI:0.342and 0.459).Lifetimeprevalenceexhibitedapositive,statisticallysignificantrelationshipwiththemeanageofthe participantsinthesamplesandwiththepublicationyearofthestudies. Conclusions:Themostrecentstudiesshowedhigherprevalenceratesthantheoldestones,andstudieswitha bettermethodologyexhibitedhigherlifetimeprevalenceratesthanstudiesthatweremethodologicallypoor. Futurestudiesshouldreportmoreinformationregardingthedefinit
