Methods:Community-basedcross-sectionalstudywasconductedbetweenSeptember2010andJuly2011at Lante,KollaShelle,DorzeandGeressiekebelesofGamoGofaZone,SouthEthiopia.Thestudysitesandstudy participantswereselectedusingmultistagesamplingmethod.Dataweregatheredthroughhouse-to-housesurvey. Atotalof858stoolspecimenswerecollectedandprocessedusingdirectwetmountandformol-ether concentrationtechniquesforthepresenceofparasite. Results:Outofthetotalexaminedsubjects,342(39.9%)werefoundpositiveforatleastoneintestinalparasite.The prevalenceofEntamoebahistolytica/disparwasthehighest98(11.4%),followedbyGiardialamblia91(10.6%),Ascaris lumbricoides67(7.8%),Strongyloidesstercoralis51(5.9%),hookworm42(4.9%),Trichuristrichiura24(2.8%),Taenia species18(2.1%),Hymenolepisnana7(0.6%)andSchistosomamansoni1(0.12%).Nostatisticallysignificantdifference wasobservedintheprevalenceofintestinalparasiticinfectionsamonglowland(37.9%)andhighlanddwellers (42.3%)(P=0.185).Theprevalenceofintestinalparasiticinfectionwasnotsignificantlydifferentamongthestudy sitesbutitwasrelativelyhigherinGeressie(42.8%)thanotherkebeles.Sexwasnotassociatedwithparasitic infections(P=0.481).Nostatisticallysignificantdifferenceofinfectionwasobservedamongtheagegroups (P=0.228)butitwashigherinreproductiveagegroup. Conclusions:Thehighprevalenceofintestinalparasiticinfectionsamongthelowlandandhighlanddwellersin Gamoareaindicatedthatparasiticinfectionsareimportantpublichealthproblems.Thus
