Methods:Werecruited250patientswithschizophreniafrom4psychiatricprimaryhealthcarecentersinNorthern Palestine.TheMSprevalencewasassessedbasedonNationalCholesterolEducationProgramAdultTreatment PanelIIIAdaptedcriteria. Results:TheoverallMSprevalencewas43.6%,with39%inmaleand55.9%infemalepatients.Onaverage,the studypatientshad2.3±1.3metabolicabnormalities.UnivariateanalysisshowedthatMSwassignificantlyhigher witholderage,femalegender,longerdurationoftheillness,smoking,abdominalobesity,highsystolicand diastolicbloodpressure,hightriglycerides,lowHDL-C,andhighfastingplasmaglucose.Multiplelogisticregression analysisshowedthatonlysystolicbloodpressure,hightriglycerides,highfastingplasmaglucose,andlowHDL-C weresignificantpredictorsofMSinschizophrenicpatients. Conclusions:MSiscommonamongArabpatientswithschizophrenia.Patientswithschizophreniashouldreceive regularmonitoringandadequatetreatmentofcardio-metabolicriskfactors.
