Methods:Thetotalpopulationof16–17-year-oldsinUppsala,Sweden,wasscreenedfordepressionin1991–1993. Adolescentswhoscreenedpositiveandanequalnumberofhealthycontrolstookpartinasemi-structured diagnosticinterview.Inaddition,21differentself-ratedsomaticsymptomswereassessed.Sixty-fourpercentof thoseadolescentsparticipatedinafollow-upstructuredinterview15yearslater. Results:Somaticsymptomsinadolescencepredicteddepressionandotheradultmentaldisordersregardlessof thepresenceofadolescentdepression.Inadolescentswithdepression,thenumberoffunctionalsomatic symptomspredicted,inadoseresponserelationship,suicidalbehavior,bipolarepisodes,andpsychoticepisodesas wellaschronicandrecurrentdepression.Contrarytoexpectations,thesomaticsymptomsofabdominalpainand perspirationwithoutexertionbetterpredicteddepressionthanallDSM-IVdepressivesymptoms.Abdominalpain persistedasanindependentstrongpredictorofdepressionandanxiety,evenaftercontrollingforotherimportant confounders. Conclusions:Somaticsymptomsinadolescencecanpredictsevereadultmentalhealthdisorders.Thenumberof somaticsymptomsconcurrentwithadolescentdepressionis,inastepwisemanner,linkedtosuicidalattempts, bipolardisorders,psychoticdisorders,andrecurrentandchronicdepression.Thesefindingscanbe
