Methods:Weperformedaprospectiveobservationalstudyinamedical-surgicalICUinatertiarynon-university hospital.Weincludedpatientsaged80oroveratICUadmissionin2005or2006andwerecordedage,admission diagnosis,intensityofcare,andseverityofacuteandchronicillnesses,aswellasICU,hospital,andone-year mortalityrates.Self-sufficiency(KatzIndexofActivitiesofDailyLiving)wasassessedatICUadmissionandoneyear afterICUdischarge.Qualityoflife(WHO-QOLOLDandWHO-QOLBREF)wasassessedoneyearafterICUdischarge. Results:Ofthe115consecutivepatientsaged80orover(18.2%ofadmittedpatients),106wereincluded.Mean agewas84±3years(range,80to92).Mortalitywas40/106(37%)atICUdischarge,48/106(45.2%)athospital discharge,and73/106(68.9%)oneyearafterICUdischarge.Inthe23patientsevaluatedafteroneyear,self- sufficiencywasunchangedcomparedtothepre-admissionstatus.Qualityoflifeevaluationsafteroneyearshowed thatphysicalhealth,sensoryabilities,self-sufficiency,andsocialparticipationhadslightlyworseratingsthanthe otherdomains,whereassocialrelationships,environment,andfearofdeathanddyinghadthebestratings. Comparedtoanage-andsex-matchedsampleofthegeneralpopulation,ourcohorthadbetterratingsfor psychologicalhealth,socialrelationships,andenvironment,lessfearofdeathanddying,betterexpectationsabout past,present,andfutureactivitiesandbetterintimacy(friendshipandlove). Conclusions:Amongpatientsaged80oroverwhowereselectedatICUadmission,80%wereself-sufficientfor activitiesofdailylivingoneyearafterICUdischarge,31%werealive,withnochangeinself-sufficiencyandwith similarqualityoflifetothatofthegenera
