Westerners predominantlyfixatetheeyesduringfacerecognition,whereasEasternersmorethenoseregion,yetrecognitionaccuracyis comparable.However,naturalfixationsdonotunequivocallyrepresentinformationextraction.Sothequestionofwhether humansuniversallyuseidenticalfacialinformationtorecognizefacesremainsunresolved. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:WemonitoredeyemovementsduringfacerecognitionofWesternCaucasian(WC)and EastAsian(EA)observerswithanoveltechniqueinfacerecognitionthatparametricallyrestrictsinformationoutsidecentral vision.Weused‘Spotlights’withGaussianaperturesof2u,5uor8udynamicallycenteredonobservers’fixations.Strikingly,in constrainedSpotlightconditions(2uand5u)observersofbothculturesactivelyfixatedthesamefacialinformation:theeyes and mouth. When information from both eyes and mouth was simultaneously available when fixating the nose (8u ), as expectedEAobserversshiftedtheirfixationstowardsthisregion. Conclusions/Significance:Socialexperienceandculturalfactorsshapethestrategiesusedtoextractinformationfromfaces, but these results suggest that external forces do not modulate information use. Human beings rely on identical facial informationtorecognizeconspecifics,auniversallawthatmightbedictatedbytheevolutionaryconstraintsofnatureand notnurture.
