QualityofType2DiabetesManagementintheStatesof TheCo-OperationCouncilfortheArabStatesoftheGulf: ASystematicReview LaylaAlhyas1*,AilsaMcKay1,AnjaliBalasanthiran2,AzeemMajeed1 1DepartmentofPrimaryCareandPublicHealth,ImperialCollegeLondon,London,UnitedKingdom,2DepartmentofMedicine,ImperialCollegeLondon,London,United Kingdom Abstract Type2diabetesmellitusisagrowing,worldwidepublichealthconcern.Recentgrowthhasbeenparticularlydramaticinthe statesofTheCo-operationCouncilfortheArabStatesoftheGulf(GCC),andtheseandotherdevelopingeconomiesareat particularrisk.Weaimedtosystematicallyreviewthequalityofcontroloftype2diabetesintheGCC,andthenatureand efficacy of interventions. We identified 27 published studies for review. Studies were identified by systematic database searches.MedlineandEmbaseweresearchedseparately(viaDialogandOvid,respectively;1950toJuly2010(Medline),and 1947toJuly2010(Embase))on15/07/2009.Thesearchwasupdatedon08/07/2010.Termssuchasdiabetesmellitus,non- insulin-dependent, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and Gulf States were used. Our search also included scanningreferencelists,contactingexpertsandhand-searchingkeyjournals.Studieswerejudgedagainstpre-determined inclusion/exclusion criteria, and where suitable for inclusion, data extraction/quality assessment was achieved using a specifically-designedtool.Allstudieswhereinglycaemic-,bloodpressure-and/orlipid-controlwereinvestigated(clinical and/orprocessoutcomes)wereeligibleforinclusion.Nolimitationsonpublicationtype,publicationstatus,studydesignor languageofpublicationwereimposed.Wefoundtheextentofcontroltobesub-optimalandrelativelypoor.Assessmentof theefficacyofinterventionswasdifficultduetolackofdata,butsuggestivethatmorewidespreadandcontrolledtrialof secondarypreventionstrategiesmayhavebeneficialoutcomes.Wefoundnorecordofauditedimplementationofprimary preventativestrategiesandanticipatethatcontrolledtrialofsuchstrategieswouldalsobeuseful.
