QualityofPharmaceuticalAdvertisementsinMedical Journals:ASystematicReview NoordinOthman1,2*,AgnesVitry1,ElizabethE.Roughead1 1Quality UseofMedicinesandPharmacyResearchCentre,School ofPharmacyandMedicalSciences, UniversityofSouthAustralia, Adelaide,Australia,2Kulliyyah of Pharmacy,InternationalIslamicUniversityMalaysia,JalanIstana,BandarInderaMahkota,Kuantan,Pahang,Malaysia Abstract Background:Journaladvertisingisoneofthemainsourcesofmedicinesinformationtodoctors.Despitetheavailabilityof regulationsandcontrolsofdrugpromotionworldwide,informationonmedicinesprovidedinjournaladvertisinghasbeen criticizedinseveralstudiesforbeingofpoorquality.However,noattempthasbeenmadetosystematicallysummarisethis bodyofresearch.Wedesignedthissystematicreviewtoassessallstudiesthathaveexaminedthequalityofpharmaceutical advertisementsforprescriptionproductsinmedicalandpharmacyjournals. MethodsandFindings:Studieswereidentifiedviasearchingelectronicdatabases,weblibrary,searchengineandreviewing citations (1950 – February 2006). Only articles published in English and examined the quality of information included in pharmaceuticaladvertisementsforprescriptionproductsinmedicalorpharmacyjournalswereincluded.Foreacheligible article, a researcher independently extracted the data on the study methodology and outcomes. The data were then reviewedbyasecondresearcher.Anydisagreementswereresolvedbyconsensus.Thedatawereanalyseddescriptively.The finalanalysisincluded24articles.Thestudiesreviewedadvertisementsfrom26countries.Thenumberofjournalssurveyed ineachstudyrangedfromfourto24journals.Severaloutcomemeasureswereexaminedincludingreferencesandclaims providedinadvertisements,availabilityofproductinformation,adherencetocodesorguidelinesandpresentationofrisk results.Themajorityofstudiesemployedaconvenience-samplingmethod.Brandname,genericnameandindicationswere usuallyprovided.Journalarticleswerecommonlycitedtosupportpharmaceuticalclaims.Lessthan67%oftheclaimswere supportedbyasystematicreview,ameta
