Trackingtheseprocessesduringperiodsofchangerevealsmechanismsfortheestablishmentofpopulationsandprovides predictivedataonresponsetopotentialfutureimpacts,includingthosecausedbyanthropogenicclimatechange.Herewe showhowahighlymobilemarinespeciesrespondedtothegainandlossofnewbreedinghabitat.Southernelephantseal, Miroungaleonina,remainswerefoundalongtheVictoriaLandCoast(VLC)intheRossSea,Antarctica,2,500kmfromthe nearestextantbreedingsiteonMacquarieIsland(MQ).Thishabitatwasreleasedafterretreatofthegroundedicesheetin theRossSeaEmbayment7,500–8,000calYBP,andiswithintherangeofmodernforagingexcursionsfromtheMQcolony. UsingancientmtDNAandcoalescentmodels,wetrackedthepopulationdynamicsofthenowextinctVLCcolonyandthe connectivitybetweenthisandextantbreedingsites.WefoundaclearexpansionsignalintheVLCpopulation,8,000YBP, followedbydirectionalmigrationawayfromVLCandthelossofdiversityat,1,000YBP,whenseaiceisthoughttohave expanded.OurdatasuggestthatVLCsealscameinitiallyfromMQandthatsomereturnedthereoncetheVLChabitatwas lost, ,7,000 years later.
