Nine of these suspected extinctions were in the freshwater gastropodgenusLeptoxis(Cerithioidea:Pleuroceridae).Leptoxiscompacta,aCahabaRiverendemic,hasnotbeencollectedfor .70yearsandwasformallydeclaredextinctin2000.Suchgastropodextinctionsunderscoretheimperilmentoffreshwater resourcesandthecurrentbiodiversitycrisisintheMobileRiverBasin.DuringaMay2011gastropodsurveyoftheCahabaRiverin centralAlabama,USA,L.compactawasrediscovered.Theidentificationofsnailscollectedwasconfirmedthroughconchological comparisons to the L. compacta lectotype, museum records, and radulae morphology of historically collected L. compacta. ThroughobservationsofL.compactaincaptivity,wedocumentforthefirsttimethatthespecieslayseggsinshort,singlelines. LeptoxiscompactaisrestrictedtoasinglelocationintheCahabaRiver,andishighlysusceptibletoasinglecatastrophicextinction event.Assuch,thespeciesdeservesimmediateconservationattention.ArtificialpropagationandreintroductionofL.compacta intoitsnativerangemaybeaviablerecoverystrategytopreventextinctionfromasingleperturbationevent.
