Received:3November2010;inrevisedform:26November2010/Accepted:29November2010/ Published:2December2010 Abstract:Remotelysensedre?ectancespectramaybebiasedbyseveralinterveningfactors, andthebiasesarepropagatedintoestimationsofthefractionofvegetationcover(FVC)by algorithmsbasedonalinearmixturemodel(LMM).TheerrorspropagatedinFVCsdepend ontheretrievalalgorithmused,duetodifferencesintheassumptionsofthemodelaswellas constraintsemployedinthealgorithm.Thesedifferencesshouldbefullyunderstoodpriorto algorithmselectionforpracticalapplications.Althoughnumerousstudieshaveinvestigated therelationshipsbetweenerrorspropagatedbydifferentalgorithms,theserelationshipshave notbeenfullyunderstoodfromadeterministicperspective.Thisstudyintroducesatechnique for deriving the analytical underpinnings of error propagation in FVC based on several LMM-basedalgorithms.Thederivationassumesthatmeasurementnoiseisband-correlated additive noise. The bias errors propagated in FVC depended on the endmember spectra assumedinthealgorithm,thetargetspectrum,andthecoef?cientsofthespectralvegetation index,whichwereemployedasconstraints,aswellasmagnitudeoftheinputerror. Itwas foundthattherelationshipsamongthepropagatederrorsassumeasymmetricellipticalforms withcoef?cientsthataredeterminedbytheinputvariables. Theseresultssuggestthatthe relationshipsdependheavilyonthechoiceofendmemberspectraaswellasthespectrum ofthetargetpixelandthevegetationindexemployedasaconstraint. Th
