Methods:Articlesfrom10cardiovascularjournalswithhighimpactfactors(Circulation,JAmCollCardiol,EurHeart J,CircRes,ArteriosclerThrombVascBiol,CardiovascRes,JMolCellCardiol,AmJPhysiolHeartCircPhysiol,JHeart LungTransplantandJCardiovascPharmacol)andpublishedin2010weresearchedusingterms‘cultured’and‘cells’ inanyordertodetermineifthesexofthosecellswasreported.Studiesusingestablishedcelllineswereexcluded. Results:Usingtwoseparatesearchstrategies,wefoundthatonly25of90articles(28%)and20of101articles (19.8%)reportedthesexofcells.Ofthosereportingthesexofcells,most(68.9%;n=31)usedonlymalecellsand noneusedexclusivelyfemalecells.Instudiesreportingthesexofcellsofcardiovascularorigin,40%usedvascular smooth-musclecells,and30%usedstem/progenitorcells.Instudiesusingcellsofhumanorigin,35%didnot reportthesexofthosecells.Noneofthestudiesusingneonatalcardiacmyocytesreportedthesexofthosecells.
