Weaimedtomeasuretheproportion,qualityandrelevanceofoncology-relatedarticles,andtorelatethis outputtotheirassociateddiseaseburden.Byincorporatingtheimpactfactor(IF)andEigenfactorTM(EF)intoouranalysiswe alsoassessedtherelationshipbetweentheseindicesandtheoutputunderstudy. Methods:Allpublicationsin2007wereretrievedforthe26mostcommoncancers.Thetop20journalsrankedbyIFandEF in general medicine and oncology, and the presence of each malignancy within these titles was analysed. Journals publishingmostprolificallyoneachcancerwereidentifiedandtheirimpactassessed. PrincipalFindings:63260(PubMed)and126845(WoS)entriesweregenerated,respectively.26neoplasmsaccountedfor 25%oftotaloutputfromthetopmedicalpublications.5cancersdominatedthefirstquartileofoutputinthetoponcology journals;breast,prostate,lung,andintestinalcancer,andleukaemia.Journalsassociatedwiththesecancerswereassociated with much higher IFs and EFs than those journals associated with the other cancer types under study, although these measureswerenotequivalentacrossallsub-specialties.Inaddition,yieldoneachcancerwasrelatedtoitsdiseaseburden asmeasuredbyitsincidenceandprevalence. Conclusions: Oncology enjoys disproportionate representation in the more prestigious medical journals. 5 cancers dominateyield,althoughthisattentionisjustifiedgiventheirassociateddiseaseburden.ThecommonlyusedIFandthe recentlyintroducedEFdonotcorrelateintheassessmentofthepreeminentoncologyjournals,noratthelevelofindividual malignancies;thereisaneedtodelineatebetweenproxymeasuresofqualityandtherelevanceofoutputwhenassessing itsmerit.Theseresultsraisesignificantquestionsregardingthebestmethodofassessmentofresea
