Ourobjectiveistoprovideanupdatedreviewofvariabilityanalysistechniques suitableforclinicalapplications.Wereviewmorethan70variabilitytechniques, providingforeachtechniqueabriefdescriptionoftheunderlyingtheoryand assumptions,togetherwithasummaryofclinicalapplications.Weproposearevised classificationforthedomainsofvariabilitytechniques,whichincludestatistical, geometric,energetic,informational,andinvariant.Wediscusstheprocessof calculation,oftennecessitatingamathematicaltransformofthetime-series.Ouraims aretosummarizeabroadliterature,promoteasharedvocabularythatwouldimprove theexchangeofideas,andtheanalysesoftheresultsbetweendifferentstudies.We concludewithchallengesfortheevolvingscienceofvariabilityanalysis.
