Leptin is required for optimal health in anumber of physiologicalsystems(e.g.fertility,bonedensity,bodyweightregulation).Despitetheextensiveleptinliteratureandmany observations of leptin’s cyclical pattern over the 24-hour day, few studies have specifically examined how the circadian rhythmofleptinmaybeessentialtoleptinsignalingandhealth.Herewepresentdataindicatingthatarhythmicleptin profile(e.g.1peakevery24hours)leadstoexcessiveweightgainduringdesynchronizedfeedingwhereasnon-rhythmic leptinprovidedinacontinuousmannerdoesnotleadtoexcessivebodyweightgainundersimilarfeedingconditions.This studysuggeststhatfeedingtimecaninteractwithleptin’sendogenousrhythmtoinfluencemetabolicsignals,specifically leadingtoexcessivebodyweightgainsduring‘wrongly’timedfeeding.
