Objective:Theobjectiveofthisstudywastodeterminetheassociationbetweenplaygroundinjuryandschool socioeconomicstatusbeforeandaftertheupgradingofplaygroundequipmenttomeetCSAguidelines. Methods:InjurydatawerecollectedfromJanuary1998-December1999andJanuary2004-June2007for 374elementaryschoolsinToronto,Canada.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoinvestigatetheeffectofaprogramof playgroundassessment,upgrading,andreplacementonschoolinjuryratesandsocio-economicstatus.Injuryrates werecalculatedforallinjuries,injuriesthatdidnotoccuronequipment,andinjuriesonplayequipment.Poisson regressionwasperformedtodeterminetherelationshipbetweeninjuryratesandschoolsocio-economicstatus. Results:Priortoupgradingtheequipmenttherewasasignificantrelationshipbetweensocio-economicstatus andequipment-relatedinjurieswithchildrenatpoorerschoolsbeingatincreasedrisk(Relativerisk:1.52[95% CI=1.24-1.86]).Afterunsafeequipmentwasupgraded,therelationshipbetweeninjuryandSESdecreasedandwasno longersignificant(RR1.13[95%CI=0.95-1.32]). Conclusions:Improvementsinplaygroundequipmentcanresultinanenvironmentinwhichstudentsfrom schoolsinpoorerneighbourhoodsarenolongeratincreasedriskofinjuriesonplayequipment.
