Methods:DatafromtheItalianMinistryofHealth(admissionsfordepression),thePharmacyServiceofaLocal HealthUnit(antidepressantprescribing)andfromtheEpidemiologicalSystemoftheVenetoregion(suiciderates) werecollectedfrom2000to2005fortheVenetoregion. Results:Suicideratesdidnotshowanymarkedincreasebutwerestableinmalesandfemales.Antidepressant prescribingincreasedexponentiallyovertheperiodexamined,whilstadmissionsfordepressionmarkedly decreased.ThetrendforanexponentialincreaseinantidepressantprescribingintheVenetoregionissharedwith othercountriesandlocales. Conclusions:Itispossiblethattheincreaseinantidepressantprescribingmightbeassociatedwithearlier treatmentofdepression,thusdecreasingthelikelihoodofaggravationofdepression.
