Methods:70subjects(41females;meanage32years)and20healthycontrols(13females;meanage24years) weretestedbyopenfoodchallenge(OFC)withcerealsandpeanut.SPTandsIgEbothwithImmulite? (Siemens) andImmunoCAP? (Phadia)tograssandbirchpollen,cereals,peanutandbromelainwereperformed. Results:Ofthe65OFC-negativesubjects29-46%(SPT,dependingoncut-off),20%(Immulite)and38% (ImmunoCAP)hadpositiveresultstooneormoreofthefoodstested.Controlswerenegativeinalltests.Cross- reactivecarbohydratedeterminants(CCD)asevidencedbyreactiontobromelaincouldexplainonlyaminorityof themeasuredIgE-sensitizations. Conclusion:Grasspollenallergicpatientswithdocumentedfoodtolerancetocerealsandpeanutmayexpress significantsensitization.False-positivecerealorpeanutallergydiagnosesmaybeaquantitativelyimportant problembothinroutineclinicalworkandepidemiologicalstudies.
