Independentof anyretrievaltechniques,thecalculatedAODretrievalrequirementsarecomparedwiththeex- pectedperformanceparametersoftheupcominghyperspectralsensorAPEXatthereference wavelengthof550nm.TheAODaccuracyrequirementsarede?nedtobecapableofresolving transmittancedifferencesof0.01to0.04accordingtothedemandsofatmosphericcorrections forremotesensingapplications. Forthepurposesofthisanalysis, thesignalatthesensor levelissimulatedbyradiationtransferequations. Theresultingradiancesaretranslatedinto theAODretrievalsensitivity(?τλ )andcomparedtotheavailablemeasuringsensitivityof aer thesensor(NE?Lλ ).Thisisdoneformultiplesignal-to-noiseratios(SNR)andsurface sensor re?ectancevalues. ItisshownthatanSNRof100isadequateforAODretrievalat550nm undertypicalremotesensingconditionsandasurfacere?ectanceof10%orless. Suchdark surfacesrequirethelowestSNRvaluesandthereforeofferthebestsensitivityformeasuring AOD.Brightersurfaceswithupto30%re?ectancerequireanSNRofaround300.Itisshown thatAODretrievalfortargetsabove50%surfacere?ectanceismoreproblematicwiththe currentsensorperformanceasitmayrequireanSNRlargerthan1000.Ingeneral,feasibility isprovenfortheanalyzedcasesundersimulatedconditions.
