Received:10July2012;inrevisedform:27August2012/Accepted:4September2012/ Published:6September2012 Abstract: In this manuscript, we present a survey of designs and implementations of research sensor nodes that rely on FPGAs, either based upon standalone platforms or as acombinationofmicrocontrollerandFPGA.Severalcurrentchallengesinsensornetworks aredistinguishedandlinkedtothefeaturesofmodernFPGAs. Asitturnsout,low-power optimized FPGAs are able to enhance the computation of several types of algorithms in termsofspeedandpowerconsumptionincomparisontomicrocontrollersofcommercial sensor nodes. We show that architectures based on the combination of microcontrollers andFPGAcanplayakeyroleinthefutureofsensornetworks,in?eldswhereprocessing capabilitiessuchasstrongcryptography,self-testinganddatacompression,amongothers, areparamount.
