Several studies report that aerobic fitness level, measured as maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max),isthesinglebestpredictoroffutureCVDmortalityinhealthypeople.Basedonthis,wewantedtostudy differencesbetweenhealthyindividualswithalargedifferenceinVO2max-leveltoidentifynewbiomarkersoflowaerobic fitnessthatmayalsohavepotentialasearlybiomarkersofCVDrisk. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Serumsamplesfrom218healthyindividualswithalowVO2max (n=108,63women)or highVO2max(n=110,64women)wereanalysedwithMRmetabolomics.Inaddition,standardclinical-chemicalanalysesfor glucose,lipids,liverenzymes,micro-CRP,andcolorimetricanalysisoncirculatingcholinewereperformed.Individualsinthe low VO2max-group had increased serum levels of free choline, decreased phosphatidylcholine, increased glucose? and decreasedunsaturatedfattyacidscomparedtotheindividualsinthehighVO2max –group. Conclusions/Significance: Aerobicfitnessdependentdifferencesinserumlevelsoffreecholineandphosphatidylcholine areobserved.TheyshouldbefurtherstudiedaspotentialearlymarkersofCVDrisk.
