Methodology/Principal Findings: A total of 84 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes were treated with rosiglitazone for 48 weeks. Circulating A-FABP and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels were determinedatbaselineandrepeatedat24and48weeks.Afterthe48-weekrosiglitazonetreatmentperiod,serumlevelsof bothA-FABPandNT-proBNPincreasedprogressivelyandsignificantly(P,0.01).SerumlevelsofA-FABPweredemonstrated tobepositivelycorrelatedwithgenderandwaistcircumferencebothatbaselineandtheendofthestudy,andwithage, bodymassindex(BMI),totalcholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),low-densitylipoproteincholesterol(LDL-C),andNT-proBNP at48weeks(allP,0.05).Inaddition,changesinA-FABPweresignificantlyandpositivelycorrelatedwithchangesinNT- proBNP(r=0.239,P=0.039).Furthermore,multiplestepwiseregressionanalysisshowedthatthechangesinA-FABPwere independently and positively associated with changes in NT-proBNP after adjusting for confounding factors (b =0.320, P =0.007). Conclusions/Significance:Rosiglitazone-mediatedincreaseofA-FABPiscloselyassociatedwiththeelevationofNT-proBNP, awell-establishedmarkerofcardiacdysfunction.ThefindingsofourstudyimplythatA-FABPmaymediatethecross-talk betweenheartandadiposetissue.
