Effectivesurveillancetomonitorandreduceincidenceoftheseinfectionsrequirestheuseofappropriatevectorsampling tools.Here,trappedskinvolatilesonfurfromsheep,aknownpreferredhostofmosquitovectorsofRiftValleyfevervirus (RVFV),wereusedwithastandardCDClighttraptoimprovecatchesofmosquitovectors.WetestedthestandardCDClight trapalone(L),andbaitedwith(a)CO2(LC),(b)animalvolatiles(LF),and(c)CO2plusanimalvolatiles(LCF)intwohighly endemic areas for RVF in Kenya (Marigat and Ijara districts) from March–June and September–December 2010. The incidencerateratios(IRR)thatmosquitospecieschosetrapsbaitedwithtreatments(LCF,LCandLF)insteadofthecontrol (L)wereestimated.Marigatwasdominatedbysecondaryvectorsandhost-seekingmosquitoeswere3–4timesmorelikely toenterLCandLCFtraps[IRR=3.1andIRR=3.8respectively]thantheLonlytrap.TheLCFtrapcapturedagreaternumber ofmosquitoesthantheLCtrap(IRR=1.23)althoughthedifferencewasnotsignificant.Analogousresultswereobservedat Ijara,wherespeciesweredominatedbykeyprimaryandprimaryRVFVvectors,with1.6-,6.5-,and8.5-foldincreasesintrap capturesrecordedinLF,LCandLCFbaitedtrapsrespectively,relativetothecontrol.Thesecatchesalldifferedsignificantly fromthosetrappedinLonly.Further,therewasasignificantincreaseintrapcapturesinLCFcomparedtoLC(IRR=1.63). MosquitospeciescompositionandtrapcountsdifferedbetweentheRVFsites.However,withineachsite,catchesdifferedin abundanceonlyandnospeciespreferenceswerenotedinthedifferentbaited-traps.Identifyingtheattractivecomponents presentinthesenaturalod
