Methods:TheTestofSelf-ConsciousAffect(TOSCA),whichisthemostusedmeasureofshame-proneness,was completedbyattemptedsuicidepatients(n=175:105womenand3menwithborderlinepersonalitydisorder [BPD],45womenand22menwithoutBPD),non-suicidalpsychiatricpatients(n=162),andhealthycontrols (n=161).Theparticipantswereconveniencesamples,withpatientsfromthreeclinicalresearchprojectsand healthycontrolsfromafourthresearchproject.Therelationshipbetweenshame-pronenessandattemptedsuicide wasstudiedwithgroupcomparisonsandmultipleregressions.Menandwomenwereanalyzedseparately. Results:Womenweregenerallymoreshame-pronethanmenofthesameparticipantgroup.Femalesuicide attempterswithBPDweresignificantlymoreshame-pronethanbothfemalesuicideattempterswithoutBPDand femalenon-suicidalpatientsandcontrols.MalesuicideattempterswithoutBPDweresignificantlylessshame-prone thannon-suicidalmalepatients.Inmultipleregressions,shame-pronenesswaspredictedbylevelofdepressionand BPD(butnotbyattemptedsuicide)infemalepatients,andlevelofdepressionandnon-suicidalityinmalepatients. Conclusions:Contrarytoourhypothesisandrelatedpreviousresearch,therewasnogeneralrelationshipbetween shame-pronenessandattemptedsuicide.Shame-pronenesswasdifferentiallyrelatedtoattemptedsuicidein differentgroupsofsuicideattempters,withsignificantlyhighshame-pronenessamongfema
