Methods:Acriticaldiscourseanalysisofarticlespublishedin‘TheAge’,anewspaperwithnationaldistribution, subsequenttothereleaseofthediscussionpaperbytheAustralianGovernmentin2008wasundertaken.The purposewastoidentifyhowAustralianmaternityservicesareportrayedandwhatpurposeisservedbythis representationtothegeneralpublic. Results:FindingsfromthiscriticaldiscourseanalysisrevealedthatAustralianmaternityservicesarebeingportrayed tothegeneralpublicasaninflexibleoutdatedservicestrugglingtomeetstheneedsofpregnantwomenandin desperateneedofreform.Thestyleofreportingemployedinthisnewspaperinvolvedpresentingtothereader therangeofexpertopinionrelevanttoeachtopic,frequentlyinvolvingpolarisedpositionsoftheexpertsonthe issue.
