Turkeyoffersparticularadvantagesforresearchinthisareabecauseoflong-standingcoexistenceofWesternand MiddleEasternfamilystructures.Weaimedtoinvestigateassociationsbetweenthequalityofkeyrelationshipsand depressioninwomenintheirthirdtrimesterofpregnancy,andtheextenttowhichtheseassociationswere modifiedbyfamilystructure. Method:Womenattendingantenatalclinicsintheirthirdtrimesterwererecruitedfromurbanandruralsettingsin Ankara.Anuclearfamilystructurewasdefinedasawifeandhusbandlivingaloneorwiththeirchildreninthesame household,whereasatraditional/extendedfamilystructurewasdefinedifanotheradultwaslivingwiththemarried coupleinthesamehousehold.DepressionwasascertainedusingtheEdinburghPostnatalDepressionScale(EPDS)and socialsupportwasassessedbytheClosePersonQuestionnairewithrespecttothehusband,motherandmother-in- law.Socialsupportwascomparedbetweenparticipantswith/withoutcase-leveldepressionontheEPDSinlinear regressionmodelsadjustedforrelevantcovariates,thenstratifiedbynuclear/traditionalfamilystructure. Results:Of772womenapproached,751(97.3%)participatedand730(94.6%)hadsufficientdataforthisanalysis. Prevalenceofcase-leveldepressionwas33.1%andthiswasassociatedwithlowersocialsupportfromallthree familymembersbutnotwithtraditional/nuclearfamilystructure.Theassociationbetweendepressionandlower emotionalsupportfromthehusbandwassignificantlystrongerintraditionalcomparedtonuclearfamily environments. Conclusions:Lowerqualityofrelationshipsbetweenkeyfamilymemberswasstronglyassociatedwiththird trimesterdepression.Familystructuremodifi
