Wepreviouslyfoundalackofsexdifferencesintheexternalgenitaliaandmorphologyoftheperinealmusclesassociated withthephallusintheeusocialnakedmole-rat.Thiswasquitesurprising,astheexternalgenitaliaandperinealmusclesare sexuallydimorphicinallothermammalsexamined.Wehypothesizedthatthelack ofsexdifferencesinnakedmole-rats mightberelatedtotheirunusualsocialstructure. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:WecomparedthegenitaliaandperinealmusclesinthreeAfricanmole-ratspecies:the nakedmole-rat,thesolitarysilverymole-rat,andtheDamaralandmole-rat,aspeciesconsideredtobeeusocial,butwithless reproductiveskewthannakedmole-rats.Ourfindingssupportarelationshipbetweensocialstructure,matingsystem,and sexualdifferentiation.Nakedmole-ratslacksexdifferencesingenitaliaandperinealmorphology,silverymole-ratsexhibit sexdifferences,andDamaralandmole-ratsareintermediate. Conclusions/Significance: The lack of sex differences in naked mole-rats is not an attribute of all African mole-rats, but appearstohaveevolvedinrelationtotheirunusualsocialstructureandreproductivebiology.
