Methods:Atotalof775713-18yearoldstudentsanonymouslycompletedtheSurveyofAdolescentLifein Vestmanland2008whichincludedquestionsonsociodemographicbackground,neighbourhoodsocialcapital, generalsocialtrust,andillhealth. Results:Lowneighbourhoodsocialcapitalandlowgeneralsocialtrustwereassociatedwithhigherratesof psychosomaticsymptoms,musculoskeletalpain,anddepression.Individualswithlowgeneralsocialtrusthadmore thanthreetimesincreasedoddsofbeingdepressed,threetimesincreasedoddsofhavingmanypsychosomatic symptoms,anddoubletheoddsofhavingmanysymptomsofmusculoskeletalpain. Conclusions:Thefindingsmakeanimportantcontributiontothesocialcapital-healthdebatebydemonstrating relationsbetweensocialcapitalfactorsandself-reportedillhealthinayoungpopulation.
