Thefollow-upofthesepatientsisthereforeofgreatimportance.Theaimofthisstudywastoexplorethedifferencesin psychosocialfactorsandreferralstofollow-upamongself-poisoningpatientsaccordingtotheirevaluatedintention. Methods:Across-sectionalmulticenterstudyofall908admissionstohospitalbecauseofself-poisoninginOslo duringoneyearwascompleted.Fifty-fourpercentwerefemales,andthemedianagewas36years.Thepatients weregroupedaccordingtoevaluatedintention:suicideattempts(moderatetohighsuicideintent),appeals(low suicideintent)andsubstance-userelatedpoisonings.Multinomialregressionanalysescomparedpatientsbasedon theirevaluatedintention;suicideattemptswereusedasthereference. Results:Ofallself-poisoningincidents,37%weresuicideattempts,26%wereappealsand38%wererelatedto substanceuse.Fifty-fivepercentofthepatientsreportedprevioussuicideattempts,58%reportedpreviousor currentpsychiatrictreatmentand32%reporteddailysubstanceuse.Overall,patientstreatedforself-poisoning showedalackofsocialintegration.Only33%wereemployed,34%weremarriedorcohabitingand53%were livingalone.Thoseinthesuicideattemptandappealgroupshadmoreprevioussuicideattemptsandreported morepsychiatrictreatmentthanthosewithpoisoningrelatedtosubstanceuse.Onethirdofallpatientswith substanceuse-relatedpoisoningreportedprevioussuicideattempts,andonethirdofsuicideattemptpatients reporteddailysubstanceuse.Genderdistributionwastheonlystatisticallysignificantdifferencebetweenthe appealpatientsandsuicideattemptpatients.Almostoneineveryfivepatientswasdischargedwithoutanyplans forfollow-up:36%ofpatientswithsubstanceuse-relatedp
