BraunandJacquatActaVeterinariaScandinavica2011,53:19 /content/53/1/19 RESEARCH OpenAccess Ultrasonographyofthereticulumin30healthy Saanengoats UeliBraun*,DésiréeJacquat Abstract Background:Thereticulumplaysacrucialroleintheruminantdigestivetractbecausetheprimarycycleofrumen motilityalwaysstartswithareticularcontraction.Incontrasttocattle,thereareonlyfewresultsonthe ultrasonographicexaminationofthereticulumingoats.Therefore,itwasthegoalofthepresentstudy,todescribe theresultsofultrasonographyofthereticulumof30healthySaanengoats. Methods:Ultrasonographywascarriedoutonstanding,non-sedatedanimalsusinga5.0MHzlineartransducer. Theshape,contourandmotilityofthereticulumwereinvestigated.Anine-minutevideorecordingofthe reticulumwasmadeforeachgoatandthefrequency,durationandamplitudeofreticularcontractionswere calculatedasdescribedforcattle. Results:Thereticulumappearedasacrescent-shapedstructurewithasmoothcontourlocatedimmediately adjacenttothediaphragm.0.8to2.1(1.41±0.31)reticularcontractionswereseenperminute.Inallgoats, biphasicreticularcontractionswereobserved.90%ofthegoatsalsohadmonophasicreticularcontractions,and twohadtriphasiccontractions.Duringthenine-minuteobservationperiods,therewere0to6monophasic reticularcontractionsand6to15biphasiccontractionspergoat.Thedurationofthebiphasiccontractionswas 6.56±0.74s,whichwassignificantlylongerthanthemonophasiccontractionsat4.31±0.81s.Theaverage intervalbetweentworeticularcontractionswas45.06±12.57s. Conclusion:Ultrasonographyofthereticulumingoatsisavaluabletooltocharacterisetheappearanceand motilityofthisorgan.Inadditiontothebiphasicmotilitypatternseenincattlethereticularmotilityofgoatsis characterizedbymonophasicreticularcontractions.Theresultsofthepresentstudyareanimportantcontribution forbetterunderstandingofthereticularmotilityingoats.
