Methods:Thisisacross-sectionalstudyusinglinkedpopulationdatabases.Thestudypopulationincludedallbirths ofNSWresidentsinNSWbetween2001and2005. Results:BirthregistrationratesinNSWwere82.66%intheyearofbirth,93.19%inthefirstyear,94.02%inthe second,94.56%inthethirdand95.08%inthefourthyearafterbirth.Thenon-registrationofbirthswasmainly associatedwithsuchfactorsasneonatalandpostneonataldeath(adjustedOR=3.84,95%CI:3.23-4.57);being Indigenous(adjustedOR=3.26,95%CI:3.10-3.43);maternalage25or39years(adjustedOR=2.81,95%CI: 2.72-2.90);lowbirthweight(2,500grams)(adjustedOR=1.79,95%CI:1.69-1.90);livinginremoteareas(adjusted OR=1.57,95%CI:1.52-1.63);beingbornafterthefirstquarterofyear(adjustedOR=1.08-1.56,95%CIbetween 1.03-1.12and1.49-1.64);motherhavingmorepregnancies(adjustedOR=1.85-7.29,95%CIbetween1.78-1.93and 6.87-7.73).MotherswhowerebornoverseasweremorelikelytoregistertheirbirthsthanthoseborninAustralia (adjustedOR=0.72,95%CI:0.69-0.75).Multiplebirthsweremorelikelytoberegisteredthansingletonbirths (adjustedOR=0.84,95%CI:0.76-0.92).Aboutone-thirdofthenon-registrationsofbirthsinNSWwereexplainedby theriskfactors.Thereasonsfortheremainingnon-registrationsneedtobeinvestigated. Conclusion:OfbirthinNSW,4.92%werenotregisteredbythefourthyearafterbirth.
