DevkotaandvanTeijlingenConflictandHealth2010,4:20 /content/4/1/20 RESEARCH OpenAccess Understandingeffectsofarmedconflicton healthoutcomes:thecaseofNepal BhimsenDevkota1,2*,EdwinRvanTeijlingen3 Abstract Objective:Thereisabundanceofliteratureonadverseeffectsofconflictonthehealthofthepopulation.In contrasttothis,sporadicdatainNepalclaimimprovementsinmostofthehealthindicatorsduringthedecade- longarmedconflict(1996-2006).However,systematicinformationtosupportorrejectthisclaimisscant.Thisstudy reviewsNepal’skeyhealthindicatorsbeforeandaftertheviolentconflictandexploresthepossiblefactors facilitatingtheprogress. Methods:Asecondaryanalysishasbeenconductedoftwodemographichealthsurveys-NepalFamilyHealth Survey(NFHS)1996andNepalDemographicandHealthSurvey(NDHS)2006;thelatterwassupplementedbya studycarriedoutbytheNepalHealthResearchCouncilin2006. Results:ThedatashowNepalhasmadeprogressin16outof19healthindicatorswhicharepartofthe MillenniumDevelopmentGoalswhilstthreeindicatorshaveremainedstatic.Ouranalysissuggestsanumberof conflictandnon-conflictfactorswhichmayhaveledtothissuccess. Conclusion:ThelessonslearntfromNepalcouldbereplicableelsewhereinconflictandpost-conflict environments.Anationwidelarge-scaleempiricalstudyisneededtofurtherassessthedeterminantsofNepal’s successinthehealthsectoratatimethecountryexperiencedadecadeofarmedconflict. Over 1,000 health studies indicate that war ranks among the top-ten posts in rural areas were destroyed [16], more than a causesofdeathworldwide[4-6].Populationsaffectedby dozenhealth workers hadbeenkilled andmany others armed conflict experience severe public health conse- wereharassed,kidnapped,threatenedandprosecutedby quences mediated by population displacement, food
