RicardandLegarraGeneticsSelectionEvolution2010,42:3 /content/42/1/3 G enetics Selection Evolution RESEARCH OpenAccess Validationofmodelsforanalysisofranksinhorse breedingevaluation AnneRicard1*,AndrésLegarra2 Abstract Background:Rankshavebeenusedasphenotypesinthegeneticevaluationofhorsesforalongtimethrough theuseofearnings,normalscoreorrawranks.Amodel,(underlyingmodel”ofanunobservableunderlying variableresponsibleforranks)exists.Recently,afullBayesiananalysisusingthismodelwasdeveloped.Inaddition, inreality,competitionsarestructuredintocategoriesaccordingtothetechnicallevelofdifficultylinkedtothe technicalabilityofhorses(horsesconsideredtobethe“best”meettheirpeers).Theaimofthisarticlewasto validatetheunderlyingmodelthroughsimulationsandtoproposeamoreappropriatemodelwithamixture distributionofhorsesinthecaseofastructuredcompetition.Thesimulationsinvolved1000horseswith10to50 performancesperhorseand4to20horsespereventwithunstructuredandstructuredcompetitions. Results:Theunderlyingmodelresponsibleforranksperformedwellwithunstructuredcompetitionsbydrawing liabilitiesintheGibbssampleraccordingtothefollowingrule:theliabilityofeachhorsemustbedrawninthe intervalformedbytheliabilitiesofhorsesrankedbeforeandaftertheparticularhorse.Theestimatedrepeatability wasthesimulatedone(0.25)andregressionbetweenestimatedcompetingabilityofhorsesandtrueabilitywas closeto1.Underestimationsofrepeatability(0.07to0.22)wereobtainedwithothertraditionalcriteria(normal scoreorrawranks),butinthecaseofastructuredcompetition,repeatabilitywasunderestimated(0.18to0.22). Ourresultsshowthattheeffectofanevent,orcategoryofevent,isirrelevantinsuchasituationbecauseranksare independentofsuchaneffect.Theproposedmixturemodelpoolshorsesaccordingtotheirparticipationin differentcategoriesofcompetitionduringtheperiodobserved.Thislastmodelgavebetterresults(repeatability 0.25),inparticular,itprovidedanimprovedestimationofaveragevaluesofcompetingabilityofthehorsesinthe differentcategoriesofevents.
