Jean-YvesHumbert1*,Jér?mePellet1,2,PierrickBuri1andRapha?lArlettaz1 Abstract Background:Meadowsareregularlymowninordertoprovidefodderorlitterforlivestockandtoprevent vegetationsuccession.However,thetimeofyearatwhichmeadowsshouldbefirstmowninordertomaximize biologicaldiversityremainscontroversialandmayvarywithrespecttocontextandfocaltaxa.Wecarriedouta systematicreviewandmeta-analysisontheeffectsofdelayingthefirstmowingdateuponplantsandinvertebrates inEuropeanmeadowlands. Methods:FollowingaCEEprotocol,ISIWebofScience,ScienceDirect,JSTOR,GoogleandGoogleScholar weresearched.Werecordedallstudiesthatcomparedthespeciesrichnessofplants,orthespeciesrichnessor abundanceofinvertebrates,betweengrasslandplotsmownatapostponeddate(treatment)vsplotsmown earlier(control).Inordertobeincludedinthemeta-analysis,comparedplotshadtobesimilarinallmanagement respects,exceptthedateofthefirstcutthatwas(mostlyexperimentally)manipulated.Theywerealsotobe locatedinthesamemeadowtype.Meta-analysesapplyingHedges’dstatisticwereperformed. Results:Plantspeciesrichnessrespondeddifferentlytothedatetowhichmowingwaspostponed.Delaying mowingfromspringtosummerhadapositiveeffect,whiledelayingeitherfromspringtofall,orfromearly summertolaterintheseasonhadanegativeeffect.Invertebrateswereexpectedtoshowastrongresponseto delayedmowingduetotheirdependenceonswardstructure,butonlyspeciesrichnessshowedaclearly significantpositiveresponse.Invertebrateabundancewaspositivelyinfluencedinonlyafewstudies. Conclusions:Thepresentmeta-analysisshowsthatingeneraldelayingthefirstmowingdateinEuropean meadowlandshaseitherpositiveorneutraleffectsonplantandinvertebratebiodiversity(exceptforplant speciesrichnesswhendelayingfromspringtofallorfromearlysummertolater).Overall,therewasalso strongbetween-studyheterogeneity,pointingtoothermajorconfoundingfactors,theelucidationofwhich require
