Methods:ThecorrelationbetweenairpollutionandpretermbirthinGuangzhoucitywasexaminedbyusingthe GeneralizedAdditiveModel(GAM)extendedPoissonregressionmodelinwhichwecontrolledtheconfounding factorssuchasmeteorologicalfactors,timetrends,weatheranddayoftheweek(DOW).Wealsoadjustedtheco linearityofairpollutantsbyusingPrincipalComponentAnalysis.Themeteorologicaldataandairpollutiondata wereobtainedfromtheMeteorologicalBureauandtheEnvironmentalMonitoringCentre,whilethemedical recordsofnewbornswerecollectedfromtheperinatalhealthdatabaseofallobstetricinstitutionsinGuangzhou, Chinain2007. Results:In2007,theaveragedailyconcentrationsofNO2,PM10 andSO2inGuangzhou,were61.04,82.51and 3 51.67μg/m respectively,whereeachdayanaverageof21.47pretermbabiesweredelivered.Pearsoncorrelation analysissuggestedanegativecorrelationbetweentheconcentrationsofNO2,PM10,SO2, andtemperatureaswell asrelativehumidity.Asforthetime-seriesGAManalysis,theresultsofsingleairpollutantmodelsuggestedthat thecumulativeeffectsofNO2,PM10 andSO2reacheditspeakonday3,day4andday3respectively.Anincrease 3 of100μg/m ofairpollutantscorrespondedtorelativerisks(RRs)of1.0542(95%CI:1.0080~1.1003),1.0688(95%CI: 1.0074~1.1301)and1.1298(95%CI:1.0480~1.2116)respectively.AfteradjustingcolinearitybyusingthePrincipal ComponentAnalysis,theGAMmodelofthethreeairpollutantssuggestedthatanincreaseof100μg/m3ofair pollutantscorrespondedtoRRsof1.0185(95%CI:1.0056~1.0313),1.0215(95%CI:1.0066~1.0365)and1.0326(95% CI:1.0101~1.0552)onday0;andRRsofthethreeairpollutants,attheirstrongestcumulativeeffects,were1.0219 (9
