Methods:Aprospective,assessor-blinded,randomisedcontrolledequivalencetrialwasconductedduring2010. Healthy,termbabies(n=280),recruitedwithin48hoursofbirth,wererandomlyassignedtohavetheirnapkinarea cleansedwithanalcohol-freebabywipe(140babies)orcottonwoolandwater(140babies).Primaryoutcomewas changeinhydrationfromwithin48hoursofbirthto4weekspost-birth.Secondaryoutcomescomprisedchanges intrans-epidermalwaterloss,skinsurfacepHanderythema,presenceofmicrobialskincontaminants/irritantsat 4weeksandnapkindermatitisreportedbymidwifeat4weeksandmotherduringthe4weeks. Results:Completehydrationdatawereobtainedfor254(90.7%)babies.Wipeswereshowntobeequivalentto waterandcottonwoolintermsofskinhydration(intention-to-treatanalysis:wipes65.4(SD12.4)vs.water63.5 (14.2),p=0.47,95%CI-2.5to4.2;perprotocolanalysis:wipes64.6(12.4)vs.water63.6(14.3),p=0.53,95%CI-2.4 to4.2).Nosignificantdifferenceswerefoundinthesecondaryoutcomes,exceptformaternal-reportednapkin dermatitis,whichwashigherinthewatergroup(p=0.025forcompleteresponses). Conclusions:Babywipeshadanequivalenteffectonskinhydrationwhencomparedwithcottonwoolandwater.
