Abstract
Background:IncreasedAlconcentrationcausesreductionofmitoticactivity,inductionofnucleolaralteration,
increaseoftheproductionofROSandalterationofseveralantioxidantenzymeactivitiesinplantcells.Alliumcepa
isanexcellentplantandausefulbiomarkerforenvironmentalmonitoring.Limitedinformationisavailableabout
theeffectsofAlonnucleoli,antioxidantenzymesystem,contentsofMDAandsolubleproteininA.cepa.
Therefore,wecarriedouttheinvestigationinordertobetterunderstandtheeffectsofAlonthegrowth,nucleoli
inroottipcellsandselectedphysiologicalandbiochemicalcharacters.
Results:Theresultsshowedthattherootgrowthexposedto50μMAlwasinhibitedsignificantly.50μMAlcould
inducesomeparticlesofargyrophilicproteinsscatteredinthenucleiandextrudedfromthenucleoliintothe
cytoplasm.Thenucleolusdidnotdisaggregatenormallyandstillremaineditscharacteristicstructureduring
metaphase.Nucleolarreconstructionwasinhibited.50μMAlinducedhighactivitiesofSODandPODinleavesand
rootssignificantly(P0.05)whencomparedwithcontrol,whereasthelevelofCATwaslowsignificantly(P
0.05).At50μMAlthecontentofMDAinleaveswashighsignificantly(P0.05)at9th dayandinrootsincreased
(P0.05)withprolongingthetreatmenttimeduring6-12days.Thesolubleproteincontentinleavestreatedwith
50μMAlwashighsignificantly(P0.05)at6th dayandincreasedwithprolongingthetreatmenttime.
Conclusions:Wesuggestthatvariationsinnucleoliandthealterationsofantioxidantenzymeactivities,MDAand
solubleproteincontentsinAlliumcepacanserveasusefulbiomarkers,whichcanprovidevaluableinformationfor
monitoringandforecastingeffectsofexposuretoAlinrealscenariosconditions.Amongtheantioxidantenzymes
SODandPODappeartoplayakeyroleintheantioxidantdefensemechanismunderAltoxicitycondition.Data
