SaporitoChiropracticManualTherapies2013,21:7 /content/21/1/7 CHIROPRACTIC MANUAL THERAPIES RESEARCH OpenAccess Englishlanguageproficiencyandthe accommodationsforlanguagenon-concordance amongstpatientsutilizingchiropracticcollege teachingclinics RichardPSaporito Abstract Background:ThenumberofhouseholdsintheUnitedStatesthatarenotproficientintheEnglishlanguageis growingandpresentingachallengetothehealthcaresystem.OvernineteenpercentoftheUSpopulationspeaka languageotherthanEnglishinthehome.Thisincreaseinlanguagediscordancegeneratesagreaterneedtofind andimplementaccommodationsintheclinicalsettingtoinsureaccurateandefficientdiagnosisandtreatmentas wellasprovideforpatientsafety.Aim:Thepurposeofthisstudyistodeterminethepercentageofpatients accessingthechiropracticcollegeteachingclinicswhoarenotproficientintheEnglishlanguageandtowhat extentthecollegesprovideaccommodationsforthatlanguagedisparity. Methods:TheclinicdirectorsanddeansoftheAssociationofChiropracticCollegesweresurveyedviaanon-line surveyengine.ThesurveyqueriedthepercentageofthepatientpopulationthatisnotEnglishlanguageproficient, theaccommodationsthecollegecurrentlyhasinplace,ifthecollegehasalanguagespecificconsenttotreat documentandifthecollegehasawrittenpolicyconcerningpatientswithoutEnglishproficiency. Results:Fiftypercentofthecontactedchiropracticcollegesrespondedtothesurvey.Intherespondentcollege clinics16.5%ofthepatientpopulationisnotproficientinEnglish,withover75%speakingSpanish.Allbutoneof therespondentsprovidesomelevelofaccommodationforthelanguagenon-concordance.Fortyfivepercentof therespondingcollegesemployalanguagespecificconsenttotreatform.Theimplementationof accommodationsandtheuseofalanguagespecificconsenttotreatformismoreprevalentatcollegeswitha higherpercentageofnon-Englishspeakingpatients. Conclusions:ThepercentageofpatientswithlimitedEnglishproficiencyaccessingservicesattheteachingclinics ofthechiropracticcollegesmirrorsthenumbersinthegeneralpopulation.Thereisawidedisparityinthe accommodation
