Methods:Air-driedaerialpartsofNPwerehydrodistillatedandGC-MSanalysisofobtainedessentialoilwas conducted.Total24maleWisterratsweighing225±25gmwerestudied.EssentialoilofNPwasadministered intraperitoneallyatthedosesof50mg/kg,100mg/kgand200mg/kgfortheexperimentalgroups.Controlrats receivedequalvolume(2ml/kg)ofnormalsaline.Antinociceptionwasassessedbytailflicktest(after30minutes) andformalintest(forfurther60minutes).Thentheanimalwassacrificedandthepawedemawasmeasured usingawaterplethysmometer. Results:4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactoneand1,8-cineolewerefoundasthemainconcentratedcomponentsofNP essentialoil.AllthedosesofNPshowedantinociception.NP200mg/kgreducedthepainsensationintailflick (p0.01)andformalintest(p0.001inbothphases).Inpawedematest,NP100and200mg/kgsignificantly reducedtheinflammation(p0.01andp0.05). Conclusion:ThisstudyrevealsthattheessentialoilofNPmayminimizeboththeacuteandchronicformsof nociceptionandmayhavepotentroleagainstinflammation,butthedoseshouldbemaintainedpreciselyto obtaintheintendedeffect.
