Abstract Background:Birthweightplaysanimportantroleininfantmortalityandmorbidity,childhooddevelopment,and adulthealth.Todatetherearecontradictoryresultsregardingtheroleofphysicalactivityonbirthweight.In addition,itisquestionedwhetherexerciseduringsecondandthirdtrimestersofpregnancymightaffect gestationalageandincreasetheriskofpretermdelivery.Hence,thepurposeofthisstudywastoexaminethe effectofasupervisedexercise-programonbirthweight,gestationalageatdeliveryandApgar-score. Methods:Sedentary,nulliparouspregnantwomen(N=105),meanage30.7±4.0years,pre-pregnancyBMI23.8± 4.3wererandomizedtoeitheranexercisegroup(EG,n=52)oracontrolgroup(CG,n=53).Theexerciseprogram consistedofsupervisedaerobicdanceandstrengthtrainingfor60minutes,twiceperweekforaminimumof12 weeks,withanadditional30minutesofself-imposedphysicalactivityonthenon-supervisedweek-days. Results:Therewasnostatisticallysignificantdifferencebetweengroupsinmeanbirthweight,lowbirthweight (2500g)ormacrosomia(≥4000g).PerprotocolanalysesshowedhigherApgarscore(1min)intheEGcompared withtheCG(p=0.02).Nodifferencewasseeninlengthofgestation. Conclusion:Aerobic-danceexercisewasnotassociatedwithreductioninbirthweight,pretermbirthrateor neonatalwell-being.
